New Green Flag Hiking Trail: Eingedi

Eingedi Retreat, in the beautiful Eastern Free State, offers the hiker a two-day, base camp trail.  Day 1 covers a distance of 11km on the Eland Trail, whilst the 6km Zebra Trail can be done on Day 2.

Both trails traverse a 530Ha game farm and take the hiker up and down hills and ladders, across game filled savannahs with numerous game and 195 bird species, and through interesting sandstone rock formations with spectacular views in all directions. Additional features include old British war forts, ruined Basotho huts and villages to explore.

Eingedi Retreat is designed for a quick week-end getaway, situated at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains.

Accommodation and Facilities

Comfortably graded, 2-star exclusive self-catering accommodation is offered at the retreat in 11 uniquely designed units, ranging from log cabins to air-conditioned chalets. Campers are also welcome.

After the day’s walk, hikers can enjoy a swim in the large pool, and a meal around the campfire, relaxing under the bright stars on mild summer nights and crisp winter evenings.

Game on the farm

Eland, Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Blue and Black Wildebeest, Gemsbuck, Springbuck, Impala, Blesbuck, Fallow Deer, Llama as well as Ostrich.

  1. We did the hike on the weekend of 13 Mar 2020. It was well maintained and marked. Effort to maintain the trail was evident, despite the recent rains that resulted in everything growing crazily. Plenty of game to view. The facilities are great, with comfortable beds and fully stocked accomodation.
I definitely recommend this hike, especially for beginner hikers.
